Tokyo 2025 - Day 7: An Unexpected Encounter at Meiji Jingu Shrine

Our Day 7 in Tokyo started with a delicious lunch, followed by a trip to Harajuku. Our initial plan was to hit the shoe stores first, but as we approached Harajuku, Meiji Jingu Shrine unexpectedly caught our eye. We decided on a spontaneous change of plans – a visit to the shrine first!

The sheer scale of Meiji Jingu was immediately impressive. Despite the constant flow of visitors, it never felt crowded. The entrance and exit areas were incredibly well-organized, and the pathways were surprisingly wide, not paved but made of soft, comfortable pebbles. At the entrance of the Tori gate, we found information about the shrine's history, but we decided to save that for later, eager to explore the grounds first.

The first thing that struck us was the massive display of sake barrels – rows upon rows of them, each with its own story and significance. From there, it was a pleasant walk to the main shrine itself. The atmosphere was peaceful and serene, despite the activity around us. We discovered various installations and activities, but what truly stole the show was a completely unexpected event: a wedding procession! It turned out that Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine, and weddings are a common and beautiful occurrence here. Witnessing this traditional ceremony was a truly special and unforgettable moment. The giddy excitement was palpable!

After witnessing the wedding, we continued exploring. We found a spot where visitors could write and submit their prayers and wishes, either anonymously in a box for a small donation or publicly displayed on wooden panels. Reading the heartfelt messages and affirmations from others was a surprisingly moving experience, offering unique perspectives and inspiring thoughts.

Next, we visited the main Shinto shrine and followed the traditional ritual: tossing a coin, bowing three times, and clapping twice. (No photos or videos allowed, which added to the reverence of the moment.) Then, we stumbled upon the "Couple Tree," another fascinating sight with its own rich history. While taking pictures, we were amazed to see another wedding procession – a new couple, in full wedding attire, entering the shrine with their entourage. It was an incredible coincidence, a truly "aha!" moment.

Finally, we found a restroom and returned to the entrance to read about the shrine's history. Meiji Jingu was more than just a visit; it was a calming and enriching experience, a wonderful opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and traditions. The unexpected wedding processions added an extra layer of magic to the day.
