HANOI 2026 TRAVEL DIARY: DAY 1 – FROM SAPA’S MOUNTAINS TO HANOI’S HEART
Early Morning Rush from Sapa Our day began long before the sun rose – at 4am, we were up and prepping for the journey from Sapa to Hanoi. After a quick refresh, we headed out at 6am for breakfast near Mimosa Hotel, where we dug into hearty fried rice with pork paired with creamy Vietnamese Drip Coffee with Milk – the perfect fuel for a long trip ahead.
By 6:45am, we were back at the hotel to freshen up and wait for our shuttle van. Prompt at 7am, the van arrived and we hurried over to the G8 Sapa bus office to board our sleeper bus. We settled in by 7:45am, and the bus pulled out sharp at 8am, leaving Sapa’s misty mountains behind. On the Road to Hanoi
The countryside between Sapa and Hanoi was a delight – rolling hills, humble villages, and crisp, chilly air made every moment worthwhile. We made our first stop at Tram Dung Nghi Dung Anh at 8:30am for a quick break and snacks, then hit the road again by 9am. At 11am, we pulled into Tran Dung Nghi 98 for our second stop – combining a rest break with lunch.
We enjoyed a smooth Vietnamese Latte and rich beef stew with bread, a comforting meal that kept us warm as we continued our journey. Arrival in the Capital We rolled into Hanoi at 2pm, and by 2:30pm we’d booked a Grab to Especen Hotel, where we quickly checked into our room. After a long day on the road, we spent the next hour resting and freshening up to shake off the travel weariness.
As evening fell, we took care of practical matters – dropping off laundry at a local shop at 9pm before heading back to the hotel by 9:30pm. A final refresh and we were ready to call it a day, settling in for sleep as Hanoi’s streets hummed outside our window. First Impressions Sapa will always hold a special place as Vietnam’s mountain gem, but Hanoi welcomed us with its own unique charm.
While its historical buildings remind us a little of Manila, the capital has a vibe all its own – a calm yet energetic pulse, with an organized chaos of traffic, locals, and travelers moving as one through the streets.
