Day 6 - Da Nang Travel Diary: Hoi An - Beckons - Ancient Streets, Herbal Tea, and a Spa Escape

Hey globetrotters! Day six was all about saying goodbye to Da Nang's coastline and diving headfirst into the historic heart of Hoi An. After our morning escapade in the coconut boats, we were more than ready for a change of pace.

From Basket Boats to Ancient Town: A Lucky Lift
Around 12:30 PM, as we wrapped up our coconut boat tour, our driver offered to take us directly to Hoi An's Old Town. Talk about a lucky break! We gladly accepted, promising to compensate him for the extra distance. A quick 30-minute ride later, we arrived in Hoi An, ready to explore.

A Warm Welcome and a Taste of Local Flavor
Our first order of business: finding a restroom for Mom. A nearby spa graciously allowed her to use their facilities free of charge – a truly kind gesture that set the tone for the day. With our appetites calling, we sought out a popular chicken rice eatery recommended by TikTok foodies. This humble spot was buzzing with both locals and tourists. While the lemon tea was a hit, my stomach was still recovering from the morning's boat ride. I managed to eat something, but I craved a sweet treat. Our mission: find the legendary MOT tea!

2:30 PM: Immersing Ourselves in Hoi An
Our self-guided tour began! We passed a museum, but the 200k VND entrance fee seemed steep. After freshening up, we made our way to the famed MOT tea. This refreshing herbal concoction (MOT tea is a signature drink of Hoi An, made from a blend of local herbs, flowers, and spices. It's known for its unique flavor and cooling properties, making it a perfect refreshment in the warm weather.) was exactly what my stomach needed. The 35k VND dine-in experience was worth every penny!

A Spa Sanctuary
The scorching heat led us to a massage parlor advertising a foot and shoulder massage for 200k VND for two people. The promise of air conditioning was too good to resist! From 2:00 to 3:30 PM, we indulged in a relaxing massage, complete with complimentary cold tea and a clean restroom. The soothing massage and fragrant incense created a tranquil escape from the heat.

3:30 PM: The Iconic Japanese Bridge
Finally, we reached the Japanese Bridge (The Japanese Bridge, or Cau Nhat Ban, is a historical landmark in Hoi An, Vietnam. Built in the early 17th century, it was constructed by the Japanese community to connect different parts of the town. The bridge features a unique architectural design with a covered walkway and a small temple inside.) To be honest, it wasn't as impressive as we'd imagined. We decided to skip the ticket, as there didn't appear to be much to see inside.

Final Thoughts
Hoi An is a captivating blend of history, culture, and relaxation. The kindness of the locals, the delicious food and drinks, and the revitalizing massage made for an unforgettable day. While the Japanese Bridge was a bit underwhelming, the overall charm of the Old Town is undeniable.
