Day 2 - Da Nang Travel Diary: Conquering Marble Mountain
Day 2 in Da Nang was all about Marble Mountain! After our quick stop at the marble sculpture factory (seriously, those guys are talented!), we hopped in a Grab car and headed to the mountain.
Right off the bat, we were a little confused. There are actually two separate attractions: Am Phu Cave and Marble Mountain. Am Phu Cave has its own entrance fee of 20k VND (around 40 PHP). From what I've heard, it's a pretty intense cave with depictions of heaven and hell. We skipped it this time, but maybe next time we'll check it out.
We opted for Marble Mountain, which cost 40k VND (about 80 PHP). Now, here's a pro tip: for an extra 15k VND, you can take an elevator up five stories! Trust me, it's worth it, especially if you're not feeling super energetic. We grabbed our tickets and zoomed up in the elevator.
It was already 2 PM when we started exploring. The weather was gloomy, but the wind still felt hot and dry. I can only imagine how scorching this place gets in the summertime!
Our first stop was a pagoda. It was pretty crowded with tourists all trying to get that perfect solo shot. We waited our turn, snapped a pic, and moved on. Apparently, there are 45 different spots to check out on the mountain! We weren't trying to hit them all, though. We were more interested in just soaking it all in and enjoying the experience.
Next up was a cave. This one was a bit of a challenge! It was super hot and there weren't any proper steps, so it was a little slippery. The path got narrower and narrower as we climbed, until we reached a tiny opening that looked a bit too risky to squeeze through. We decided to turn back and head down.
We were starting to feel the heat, so we took a 15-minute break on some benches to catch our breath. After that, we headed to another pagoda that was supposed to have a view of My Khe Beach. Honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. The trees completely blocked the view, and we could only catch a tiny glimpse of the beach. Oh well!
Our next stop was the relaxation area. This was basically a big, flat area with stalls and kiosks selling drinks and snacks. Unfortunately, most of them were closed. We did find a free toilet, though! The lady guarding it was pretty insistent that we buy something from her, so I ended up getting some Mentos for 20k VND.
After chilling for about 30 minutes, we made our way to Buddha Cave. This place was magical! It reminded me of something out of Final Fantasy. The cave was cool and peaceful, and we ended up spending almost 30 minutes there just soaking it all in.
Eventually, around 4 PM, we decided to call it a day. As we were walking out, we stumbled upon a temple and realized that we had exited Marble Mountain on the opposite side from where we started, completely bypassing the elevator!
Overall, Marble Mountain was an awesome experience. You definitely can't see everything in one day, so plan accordingly.
Traveler Tips:
- Bring extra clothes – you'll probably sweat!
- Wear light or hiking clothes.
- Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Marble Mountain is a must-see if you're ever in Da Nang!
