Hotel Review: Siquijor Day 1 - RCM Ecolodge

Stepping off the Ocean Jet Ferry in Siquijor, the tropical heat hit us like a wave – a fantastic sign of the good weather to come! First things first: lunch. Joel's Lechon Manok was our target, and their roasted chicken and beef soup were exactly what our rumbling stomachs needed. Fuelled up, we contacted our tour guide to whisk us away to our hotel, the RCM Ecolodge in San Juan.

The journey was a short 15-minute ride from the port, but the location was a bit of a surprise. Nestled within a quieter, inner community, the hotel's proximity to the main tourist road is deceptive. Tricycles were scarce, so having a rented vehicle would definitely be recommended for easy access. It's a short 5-10 minute walk to the main road, which isn't a huge deal, but it's something to keep in mind. The upside? We were right in the heart of the JJs Backpackers area, which added to the laid-back vibe.

RCM Ecolodge itself is charmingly quaint, a true backpacker's haven. Everything about the place screams eco-friendly and minimalist design. The rooms are compact – perfect for sleeping, with just enough space for luggage. The bathroom is shared, which is standard for this type of accommodation, and there's a communal kitchen area if you fancy whipping up your own meals. Free drinking water and towels were provided, a nice touch. We opted for a fan room, and during our visit, the evenings were pleasantly cool, so the lack of air conditioning wasn't an issue.

Siquijor experiences rotational brownouts (power outages), and unfortunately, RCM Ecolodge doesn't have a generator. This wasn't a major problem for us, but it's something to be aware of. Despite the absence of security guards, I felt perfectly safe throughout our stay.

Overall, RCM Ecolodge offers fantastic value for budget travelers. It's clean, comfortable enough, and perfectly situated for exploring the island. The eco-friendly approach is a big plus, and the communal atmosphere fosters a friendly, relaxed environment. If you’re looking for luxury, this isn't the place for you. But if you’re a budget-conscious traveler who values a unique and authentic experience, then RCM Ecolodge is a great choice.
