Sukiya in SM Megamall: A Long Wait for a So-So Meal

Let's be honest, sometimes you just crave a quick, affordable Japanese meal. Sukiya in SM Megamall often fits the bill, at least in theory. The reality, however, is a bit more complicated. I recently braved the notoriously long queue (a testament to its popularity, I guess?), and while my solo status snagged me a seat relatively quickly, the experience wasn't exactly a culinary highlight.

The atmosphere was, shall we say, less than ideal. The restaurant felt a bit hot and surprisingly oily – not exactly the ambiance you'd expect from a place serving Japanese food. I ordered the Fiery Garlic Yakiniku Bowl, a yakisoba on the side, and their signature matcha latte. The wait was a significant drawback; I clocked at least fifteen minutes before my food arrived. Fifteen minutes for a bowl of yakiniku and some noodles. That's a long time to sit in a slightly oily, warm room.

Now, let's talk about the food itself. The matcha latte was the star of the show, in my opinion. Creamy and rich, it had that classic matcha flavor. However, it was excessively sweet. A bit of a sugar reduction would elevate it to perfection. The yakisoba, on the other hand, was a major disappointment. Bland and lacking in any real flavor, it was essentially edible noodles with a touch of soy sauce. The Fiery Garlic Yakiniku Bowl fared slightly better, but only slightly. The yakiniku itself was cooked well enough, but it was overwhelmingly salty. The "fiery garlic" element was mostly absent, which was a bit of a letdown considering the name.

Considering the price point, I guess you get what you pay for. It's a budget-friendly option, and that's a definite plus. But honestly, the long wait, the less-than-pleasant atmosphere, and the uneven quality of the food left me wanting more. The matcha latte saved the day somewhat, but it wasn't enough to redeem the entire meal.

So, would I recommend Sukiya in SM Megamall? Probably not. There are other Japanese restaurants around that offer a better balance of price, quality, and overall dining experience. Unless you're desperate for a cheap and quick bite and don't mind a long wait and a slightly less-than-perfect environment, I'd suggest exploring other options. Maybe try their other branches; this particular location needs some serious improvement.
