I ❤️ Tokyo - Day 4 - Hakone Tour - Hakone Ropeway - 03/12/2025
Okay, so Hakone Ropeway. Picture this: we're crammed onto a tourist bus, buzzing with excitement (and maybe a little bit of jet lag). Next stop? The Hakone Ropeway – basically a cable car that whisks you up to Owakudani, home of those legendary black eggs. You know, the ones that supposedly add seven years to your life? Worth a try, right? 😉
Now, being the VIPs we are (don't worry, I'll spill the tea on that later), we totally skipped the queue. Straight to the front! The cable car itself? Think cozy, slightly swaying metal box, enough room for about 15 people. It was a total novelty for us; we don't have anything quite like this back home. It's one of those experiences that makes you feel like a kid again.
The weather, unfortunately, decided to play spoilsport. Gloomy skies meant Mt. Fuji was nowhere to be seen. Our tour guide, bless her heart, pointed out where it should have been, but we were left to fill in the blanks with our imaginations. Honestly, I think this ropeway would be absolutely epic on a clear day. Imagine those stunning views of Mt. Fuji! That's definitely on my mental "must-do again" list.
Even without the mountain views, though, the journey was incredible. The scenery was breathtaking, even with the overcast. Seriously, the views were so interesting and varied – lush forests, volcanic landscapes… it was like a mini-adventure all on its own. It was packed, naturally – I mean, who wouldn't want to ride this thing? – but the atmosphere was electric. Everyone was so excited.
Owakudani itself was pretty cool too. The smell of sulfur hung heavy in the air (it's a volcanic area, after all!), and the black eggs were everywhere. We grabbed a few, of course. Seven more years of life? I’ll take it! We also grabbed some other snacks and souvenirs. The whole experience felt very authentically Japanese.
The Hakone Ropeway wasn't just a ride; it was a journey. A journey through stunning scenery, a journey into a different culture, and a journey into a slightly surreal, slightly sulfurous world. It was definitely a highlight of our trip, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Hakone. Just maybe pack an umbrella, and hope for a clear day to see Mt. Fuji in all its glory!
