Day 4 - Da Nang Travel Diary : Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh

Day 4 - Da Nang Travel Diary : Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh

Our fourth day took us from the vibrant city of Da Nang to the historical city of Hue. After wrapping up our Imperial City tour at 3 PM, we booked a Grab to the Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh.

Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh: A Glimpse into History
The Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh in Hue is an elaborate tomb complex built for the Nguyen Dynasty Emperor Khai Dinh. This tomb is not just a burial place but also reflects the power, wealth, and beliefs of the emperor. Khai Dinh's mausoleum is unique, mirroring the personality and reign of the emperor it honors.
The Unexpected Grab Driver
We arrived at the mausoleum around 3:25 PM. One thing we quickly noticed was the scarcity of Grab cars in the area. Our driver then made an unexpected offer: he would wait for us and take us back to the Hue bus terminal for our return trip to Da Nang. We were pleasantly surprised, especially since he didn’t ask for any additional fare, suggesting we just book him again.

Refreshments and Reality Check
Before diving into the tomb exploration, we decided to grab some refreshments at 3:45 PM. I ordered an iced lemonade, which was incredibly refreshing given the sweltering heat. However, the price was double what you’d expect, a premium for enjoying it in an air-conditioned space. The heat and dry weather were definitely taking a toll on us.

Exploring the Mausoleum
At 4 PM, we entered the mausoleum after purchasing tickets for 150,000 VND (about 300 pesos). Honestly, it felt a bit steep for what was on offer. Unlike the sprawling Imperial City, there wasn’t as much to see here.
We toured the tomb, which was built on a steep incline. The architecture was impressive, with terraces leading up to the main structures. Unfortunately, the audio guides weren’t offered proactively by the staff, which was a letdown. It would have been great to have some context while exploring.
The view from the top was indeed gorgeous, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. However, that was the highlight. The tomb itself was grand and screamed affluence, but learning about the dark history associated with it left me feeling a mix of sadness and anger.

The Dark Side of Royal Grandeur
The construction of these mausoleums often involved heavy exploitation of the Vietnamese people. The immense wealth and resources poured into these projects came at the cost of immense suffering for the commoners. The inequality of the monarchy is starkly evident when you realize the lavish lifestyle of the emperors was supported by the labor and sacrifices of the masses.
It took us about 30 minutes to see everything, and honestly, the 150,000 VND felt overpriced.

A Generous Gesture Rewarded
By 4:25 PM, we were back at the coffee shop, grabbing more refreshments and reconnecting with our Grab driver, who had waited an entire hour without asking for more money. We decided to give him a 100,000 VND tip to show our appreciation for his exceptional service.
Final Thoughts
The Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh is a place that evokes mixed feelings. While the architecture and views are stunning, the history behind it is a sobering reminder of the social inequalities of the past.
