Day 7 - Da Nang Travel Diary: Night Lights, Risky Rides & My Khe Beach Magic!
Hey travel buddies! Day 7 took an unexpected turn as I ventured into Da Nang's vibrant nightlife and experienced the magic of My Khe Beach under the stars.
At 6:30 pm, the travel crew and I decided to split up for a bit to pursue our own evening adventures. I was itching to dive into the Da Nang city night life scene. Da Nang at night is a completely different beast! The city transforms into a dazzling display of lights, with bustling streets, lively bars, and a palpable energy in the air. It's a feast for the senses and a perfect opportunity for some solo exploration. Gracia and Mecha were keen on catching the sunset at My Khe Beach, while Mader Earth and Badet opted for a relaxing facial and spa treatment.
I booked a Grab motorcycle (xe ôm) to fully immerse myself in the POV of Da Nang at sunset and into the evening. Riding a motorcycle through the city streets was an unforgettable experience! It felt like a personalized city tour, zipping past colorful restaurants, buzzing bars, and trendy cafes, all while soaking in the local atmosphere. The freedom of the open road and the cool breeze in my hair made it an exhilarating ride.
Around 9 pm, I made my way to My Khe Beach. My Khe Beach is one of Da Nang's most famous attractions, and for good reason! During the day, it's a sunbather's paradise with its long stretch of white sand and clear blue waters. But at night, it takes on a different kind of charm. The beach becomes a tranquil oasis, with the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore and the city lights twinkling in the distance. I strolled along the beach, enjoying the peaceful ambiance, before stopping at a local grocery store to pick up a few essentials.
With my shopping done around 10 pm, I attempted to book a Grab ride back to the hotel. However, a habal-habal driver approached me. For those unfamiliar, a habal-habal is essentially a motorcycle taxi, similar to what you might find in the Philippines. After some hand gestures and a quick price comparison with the Grab app, we agreed on a fare. I decided to skip the app booking and pay him directly.
As I hopped on the back of his motorcycle and he revved the engine, I couldn't help but notice a distinct smell of alcohol. The driver was clearly a bit tipsy. A wave of "what am I doing?" washed over me. This was straight out of a horror movie! But hey, YOLO, right? (Maybe not the smartest decision, I admit!)
He spoke to me in Vietnamese, pointing at my phone. I gathered he needed the exact location. I pinned my hotel on Google Maps and showed it to him. Holding my phone for navigation, I took in the sights and sounds of the city.
Then came the unexpected highlight of the night. We drove across the Dragon Bridge! The Dragon Bridge is an iconic Da Nang landmark, a massive steel bridge shaped like a dragon that spans the Han River. On weekends, the dragon breathes fire and water in a spectacular show. I glanced at my watch – it was exactly 9 pm, the usual showtime. Sadly, it was a weekday, so no fire-breathing dragon tonight. Still, riding across the illuminated Dragon Bridge felt like a magical moment, like the stars had aligned just for me.
